Top 5 Home Remedies for Carpet Stain Removal

At Sloane’s Carpet Secret, we want your investment in carpet to last as long as possible. A very important way to improve the longevity of your carpet is to keep it clean. This month we focus on home remedies that can be used to remove stains. Sometimes you will not have a carpet cleaner on hand when a spill or accident occurs, so these remedies are all made out of materials you likely have around the house.

  1. A dish detergent solution
Mix ¼ teaspoon of clear dish detergent to 1 cup of warm water. You may need more than this if the stain is large, so use this ratio to increase the amount of solution if need be. Use a white cloth to blot the solution directly onto the stain. When the stain is gone, pour warm water onto the spot to remove any remaining detergent.
  2. Vinegar and baking soda
Make a paste using equal parts vinegar and baking soda, and then mix the paste with warm water to create a paint-like consistency. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the paste onto the stain. Then, use warm water to clean the area with a cloth or sponge.
  3. Club soda
This is one of the oldest tricks in the book, and it still holds up, especially with wine and soda stains. Pour club soda onto the stain and allow it to sit for about 3 minutes. Then use a rag or sponge to blot the stain.
  4. Shaving cream
This one seems strange, but it works wonders and will leave the spot smelling great, too! First blot the stain with a wet cloth. Then spray a small amount of shaving cream—you know how far a little bit of shaving cream can go, so make sure to take it slow. You can always add more! Allow the stain to sit for a couple of minutes and then wipe the shaving cream with a damp sponge or cloth. You will likely need to pour a bit of warm water on the spot after the stain is removed in order to get rid of an leftover shaving cream.
  5. For oily stains
All you need to do is sprinkle a hefty amount of cornstarch onto the stain and let it sit for several hours. Then vacuum the cornstarch right up! Bonus: you can also use a cornstarch and milk paste to remove ink stains. Mix equal parts cornstarch and milk, use a brush to apply the paste to the stain, and allow several hours for the paste to dry. Brush away any residue and vacuum the rest right up!
