3 Steps to Keep your Carpet Clean

The life of your carpet is tied directly to the care it receives. Even though it’s easy to replace your carpet at Sloane’s Carpet Secret, where you can get premium brand carpet irregulars for up to 60% off, we want to help you extend the life of your carpet as long as possible. Carpet truly is one of the easiest types of flooring to maintain with these three easy steps to keep your carpet clean.

  1. Vacuum regularly

The amount you should vacuum each week really depends on your lifestyle. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends you vacuum at least once per week with a high-quality vacuum cleaner. Not only will regular vacuuming help your carpet last longer, it’s one of the best ways to improve the air quality in your home. You should vacuum high-traffic areas more often or if you have pets or lots of family members tracking in dirt and grime.

Tips to vacuum effectively

• Take your time when vacuuming. Go SLOW and steady to get the best results.
• Be sure to do the dusting before vacuuming to save yourself from having to vacuum twice.
• Get out that crevice tool and move the furniture around to get all corners of the carpet.

Need a new vacuum? There are typically good spring cleaning deals in April or May.

2. Clean spills quickly!

The longer spills stay on your carpet, the higher the chance they will penetrate deep into the fibers and become permanently set. It’s very important to clean spills quickly with this two-step process:

Absorb the spill:
Scoop up any solids with a spoon. Use a neutral or white-colored towel to blot the liquid away from the carpet. You do not want to use a brush or scrub carpet; it can cause damage.

Treat the spot:
Once you have extracted as much moisture as possible from the fibers, it’s time to treat the spot. Even if the cleaner you use has the CRI Certified Seal of Approval, you should always pretest it on a scrap of carpet or in a low visibility spot. You can also mix up an equal amount of vinegar and water or club soda. Use a small amount of cleaner on a white cloth to blot from the outside edge of the stain to the center. After the stain is gone, blot the area with water to remove any remaining cleaner.

3. Deep clean carpet every 12-18 months

No matter how often you vacuum, it does not take the place of deep cleaning the fibers every 12 to 18 months. It helps remove the dust and dander so you improve your indoor air quality
