4 Green Cleaning Products You Can Make Yourself

Have you ever looked at the ingredient list on your cleaning supplies or carpet cleaning products and realized you can’t actually pronounce 95% of them? Almost every single product on the shelves also has words like danger, warning, or caution on them. Maybe it’s time to find a green cleaning substitute for your current cleaning supplies. At Sloane’s Carpet Secret we understand that no one should live in a house full of toxic chemicals and recommend that you give these safe, green alternatives a try for your day-to-day cleaning.

All-Purpose Cleaner

Having a cleaner that can be used for kitchen or bathroom counters, stove tops, and mirrors is great, and often hard to find. Instead of using a toxic cleaner all around your house, use this quick recipe for an effective (and safe) all-purpose cleaner. All you need is a 32oz spray bottle, 1 cup of distilled vinegar, 3 cups of water, and a couple drops of essential oil (if you want fragrance). Use this product on just about any surface for a clean home.

Dishwasher Cleaner

Dish detergent is a little harder to make from scratch, but keep in mind that any remnants of cleaning supplies are left over on your plates and cups, which you eat and drink from. In the long run, while this might take five extra minutes to make, you’re not going to be ingesting any chemicals. You’ll need a mason jar, 2 cups of Super Washing Soda, 1 cup of Borax, ½ cup salt, and ½ cup citric acid. Mix the ingredients well and use one tablespoon per load. Remember to seal your mason jar nice and tight after each use!

Bathtub and Sink Cleaner

It’s never fun to do a thorough scrub of the bathtub or sinks. These two places seem to get scum in the smallest cracks possible, which is so frustrating. It can seem impossible to make them squeaky clean again, but with this simple mixture you can enjoy a new looking bathtub and sink in no time. You’ll need a bowl, baking soda, a squirt of dish soap, and a squeeze of lemon. Mix the ingredients together until the consistency looks like frosting. Once mixed, apply all over. If you have some extra tough spots, allow your mixture to sit for 10 minutes before rinsing. This will work well for any dirt and grime stuck in the grout of tile too!

Carpet Cleaner

While it may be difficult to clean your carpet completely on your own, there’s no limit to how much spot cleaning you can do! This concoction will clean the spots on your carpet without bleaching them to the point of making the rest of your carpet look worse. Start by vacuuming your carpet like crazy, then mix ¼ cup of salt, ¼ cup of Borax, and ¼ cup vinegar. This should create a paste which you can put on spots that need extra cleaning. Allow the paste to sit on the carpet for a few hours. Once you’re finished with that, vacuum away the remnants and say goodbye to unsightly stains. If you own a steam cleaner, this would also be a good time to give your carpet a nice steam clean as well.
