Maintaining Your Outdoor Carpets

Rid your carpet of oil stains.
Luckily, outdoor carpeting is made to weather most staining, but oil stains can be a real problem for these carpets. Never fear: this is easy to fix! Apply a dish detergent to your carpet—it will remove the oil the same way it removes it from your dishes. The easiest thing to do is grab a sponge and apply a small amount (about the size of a dime) of dish soap. Scrub the stain until you create a lather. Then thoroughly rinse and dry your carpet.
Invest in a wet/dry vacuum.
One of the only major problems with outdoor carpet is wicking, which is caused when dirt, debris and water sink down to the bottom of the carpet. You won’t be able to see this when you vacuum and your carpet will appear clean, but the dirt and debris will quickly rise back up. A wet/dry vacuum will do a better job of reaching a bit more deeply into your carpet to pull that debris out.
Vacuum often!
The more often you vacuum, the less likely you are to have maintenance issues with your carpeting. Frequent vacuuming also reduces the appearance of crushing, which occurs when the carpet doesn’t rise back up to normal after people step on it.
Address mildew and mold.
Mildew and mold are probably the most common problems you will encounter with your outdoor carpet. Luckily, this is yet another very easy fix! It is important to rid your carpet of mold and/or mildew as soon as you notice a problem. To get rid of mildew, throw your carpet into the direct sun for several hours. For mold, mix 4 parts water with 1 part bleach and treat your carpet with this solution. Keep in mind that the bleach may discolor some carpets, so you might invest in a non-bleach cleaning solution!
