Catch Denver’s Best Live Music—For Free!

Who doesn’t like to groove along to live music? It’s that much sweeter when the tickets are extremely affordable or even free! When we’re not tending shop at our weekend-only showroom selling name-brand carpet in Denver, our Sloane’s Carpet Secret family enjoys an evening out to experience Denver’s best live music. To help you infuse your life with the joy of live music, we’ve pulled together some of Denver’s best spots to catch live music (many times for free)!

El Chapultepec
After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, El Chapultepec (the Pec) opened for business in the same building it resides in today on Market Street. It transformed from just a restaurant into a destination for live music lovers after the founder’s son-in-law, Jerry Krantz, took over operations. With a who’s-who list of patrons that include Jack Kerouac, President Bill Clinton, Frank Sinatra, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, the Pec is still a fabulous spot to catch live music and most of the time you don’t need to pay a cover!

Tennyson’s Tap
Just north of downtown Denver, Tennyson’s Tap at 38th and Tennyson features bluegrass, punk rock, jazz and acoustic nights with no cover charges. While tuning in to enjoy the music, enjoy the local brews and spirits at the Very Happy Hours, daily 6-7 p.m.

Herman’s Hideaway
Although Herman’s Hideaway on south Broadway also hosts ticketed shows, it’s a great place to catch tomorrow’s stars before they hit it big at a free or very affordable show! This was where Phish played its first Denver show in 1990, while Big Head Todd and the Monsters, The Fray, Dave Matthews Band, Widespread Panic and more have also graced Herman’s stage.

Appaloosa Grill
Colorado’s Governor, John Hickenlooper, was one of the visionaries behind the Appaloosa Grill, AKA “The Horse”, when it opened in 2001. Although ownership has changed hands, the live music and made-from-scratch menu continues to delight! Take advantage of the restaurants daily happy hour and late-night menus while catching some of today’s top musical talent when they make their stop at Appaloosa.

City Park Jazz
Mark your calendar for the beginning of June when the continuation of one of Denver’s most loved summer traditions for the last 27 years begins—Sunday-night free live jazz concerts at the pavilion in City Park. Pack a picnic dinner, bring a blanket and lounge on the park’s lawn with hundreds of your fellow Denverites.
