Paint a Mural to Complement Carpet for Sale
Another fantastic—and budget-friendly—way to enhance any room in your home, besides finding carpet for sale, is to paint a mural. Even if you wouldn’t consider yourself an artist, there are several designs that even novice artists can tackle with ease. To make your family mural project a success, follow the suggestions we’ve outlined below.
Select Your Mural Image
Unless you hire a professional mural artist, it’s important to find an image that gives you the finished look you want while staying within your own capabilities. Start by seeing what others have done by searching Google Images, Pinterest and even the websites of mural artists for inspiration. While searching, keep in mind the space you have designated for your art and make sure to consider the scale, placement and color of your mural. Before you start breaking out in a cold sweat, remember, it’s just paint! If you end up not liking the finished mural, just paint over it! If this is your first mural, keep it simple.
Supply List
Collect all of your supplies for your mural project before any painting begins. Experts recommend:
- Sandpaper or wall patch kit to prep the wall
- Chalk or pencil
- Black permanent marker
- Acrylic paints and acrylic matte medium
- Paintbrushes, small set for detail work and wider set to quickly cover larger areas
- Projector
- Transparency film
- Masking or painter’s tape
- Drop cloth or newspapers
- Damp cloth
Prep the Painting Surface
The wall or ceiling you have selected as the canvas for your mural should be wallpaper free, unless you want to incorporate the wallpaper into your design. You should also fill any cracks or holes and smooth out any rough areas before you start painting otherwise your mural will be impacted by shadows these will cause. Wipe down the wall with a sponge and a little soapy, warm water to clean any dust and debris from the surface and let dry.
Transfer the Design
If you’re good at freehand, use chalk or pencil and lightly sketch the image on the wall. Projectors also work well to transfer the design and give you the flexibility to test the image out in different areas of the room before marking the wall. To use a projector, you need to create a transparency of your image. Projectors can also be homemade out of cardboard and a flashlight. After your design is on the wall, tape the outline of the image with painter’s tape, especially if you have textured walls, otherwise your lines won’t be crisp.
Paint
First, paint the biggest blocks of color with a wide brush for quick coverage in the center of the area, and use a smaller brush along the edges. Let the paint dry before moving on to the next biggest blocks of color or before layering paint. If you make a mistake, quickly dab the color with your damp cloth to remove the error.
