Commercial Carpet for Lasting Appeal and Longevity
Rather than measuring a carpet on price, measure a carpet by its performance.
- How long and how well it retains the clarity and depth of its color
- How well it resists matting, crushing, and loss of textural appeal
Don’t sacrifice quality, especially in heavy-traffic, high-use areas. The highest traffic areas are usually stairs and hallways, and it is recommended to buy the best quality you can afford. Cheaper carpets of lower quality wear much faster, and need to be replaced a lot sooner. If you buy the best quality you can afford, you will save money in the long run, as you will not have to spend the money to replace it as soon.
So-Called Bargains
“Bargain” carpets are often not worth the cheap cost. Over time, the higher quality, more expensive carpet will end up being the more economical decision, as it will wear better, and you will not have to replace it as soon.
The Correct Yarn
- Olifin – A softer, less expensive yarn that will typically not perform well in heavy traffic areas. It is appropriate for low traffic areas or short term projects.
- Nylon – The yarn of choice in high traffic and soil areas. Nylon can be divided into generic yarn and premium state of the art branded yarns. The premium nylons will show less soil, clean better, wear less and generally look much better in heavy traffic areas for many more years. Most of Sloane’s Colorado commercial carpets are these premium yarns, typically Antron Legacy, Antron Lumena or Ultron VIP.
The Backing
- Level 1 – Tufted
Most commercial carpet is tufted, which is a method of punching the carpet through the primary backing and then latexing or gluing on a secondary plastic backing. This is your most basic backing.
- Level 2 – Ultra Performance System (UPS)
The next level of performance for backing is to use an Ultra Performance System (UPS) backing. This is state of the art, patented technology that greatly enhances the performance and wear of tufted carpet.
- Level 3 – Woven
The ultimate in commercial performance is woven carpet. Time has proven that woven carpets typically out perform any other carpet construction. Woven carpets provide greater appearance retention, built in cushion properties and longer life cycles. Usually woven carpets last 2 to 3 times longer than similar non-woven carpets. Also woven carpet is “green” because the fibers interlace, using less latex and secondary backings.
For thousand of years the art of weaving has produced the finest carpets. Now, we are able to replace this with far better technology using electronically powered looms and state of the art computer technology. In the weaving process, pile yarns are interlaced into the foundation, creating a structure whereby backing and face yarns become one.
Measure For Carpet
- Measure the room or area extending into the doorways
- “Round up” inches to the next foot.
- If the area is irregular, divide it into squares or rectangles and measure each area and then add all of your squares together for your total. See our Carpet Buying Guide’s carpet estimator diagram below for calculation instructions.
- Estimate the measurement for the stairs
- Count how many steps there are
- Measure the width of one step
- Multiply the width by 1.5. (This will give you the square foot per step)
- Multiply the square foot per step from (C.) by the number of total steps
- Add the totals from #1 and #2 to get a total square footage, then add an additional 10% to this total, to allow for “waste”
Make sure your Carpet is Installed by a Master Installer
Installation is a very important aspect to your carpet purchase. You can buy great carpet, but if it’s installed poorly, it will diminish the durability and performance of the carpet. Just as you would not want a hamburger flipper to cook you a fine meal, you would not want an inexperienced installer to install your fine new commercial carpet.

- Once you purchase your commercial carpet, we will call you within a few days to set up an appointment to professionally measure the area that needs to be carpeted.
- After the professional measurement, the Master Installer schedules an install time.
- The Master Installer delivers the carpet to your location.
- The Master Installer removes and disposes of your existing carpet and pad (if carpet and pad is there in need of disposal).
- The Master Installer installs your new commercial carpet on the set day and time.
